Each year many people fall victim to the hypes of certain diets.  A they scramble to shed the pounds of last year, they are looking for any possible diet plan for the easy way out.  Despite being forewarned about the negative consequences of fad diets, people still get duped by their gimmicks.  For 2012, don’t be a sucker for these horrible diet plans.  They will only backfire on you and leave you feeling horrible.  To help you spot out these fad diets, here are some pointers on how to distinguish a good diet versus a fad diet.

Any diet plan that has the following [fill in the blank] diet is sure to be a fad.  Take for example the grapefruit diet, the detox diet,  the junkfood diet, the Hcg diet,  the dukan diet, banana diet, the egg diet, the cookie diet, the leek diet, or the baby food diet.

Let’s be honest here, despite the fact that so-called “doctors” came up with these diet plans, a monkey with half a brain could also have come up with these “diet plans”.  The basic concept here is to pick out a somewhat healthy food and only consume that food.  Of course people will lose weight if they are only allowed to eat a certain amount of one type of food.

These diet plans are pitted for failure because unless you can stick to that diet for the rest of your life, you will not be able to maintain the weight you lose.  They are crash and burn diets, meaning if you are able to stick with it for a week or two, then yes you will lose weight, but don’t expect to keep the weight off.  People who try these types of diets and fail are also more likely to overeat once they are off the diet, causing them to gain more weight than they were previous to the diet.

These diets don’t work because they are quick fixes.  If you are genuinely interested in weight loss, you need to learn how to incorporate an entire food group into your diet.  It is impossible to expect someone to eat the same food, day after day.  It is also very damaging for your health as you will be deficient in other nutrients.

Everyone probably knows what the master cleanse diet is; perhaps you’ve even considered it or attempted to try it out.  Whatever the case may be, these diets has a similar concept as the diet previously mentioned.  The general idea is to only drink a specific type of liquid (apple vinegar water, cranberry juice, lemon juice, etc) and eat steamed veggies or fruit.

The thinking is that this diet of only liquids will flush the toxins out of your body.  If you are only consuming veggies and diluted cranberry juice, of course you will encounter weight loss.  However, this is a diet that is horrible for your body.  Essentially you are starving yourself and your body of nutrients it needs to maintain normal everyday functions.

Like the fill in the blank diet, the liquid diet is a short-term diet.  Most people are able to do it for a couple of days.  Stars like Beyonce used this diet for two weeks to drop 20 pounds or so for her movie Dream Girls.  Despite the fact that she got to the weight she needed to be, she does not recommend this diet.  People who are able to lose some weight while on the short-term diet find themselves gaining it back once they are off of it.

Generally, any weight loss plan that claims an instantaneous drop in weight is most likely to be a scam.  Before you nose dive into the newest weight loss plan, ask yourself if this is something that you can see yourself sticking with.  If you don’t think you can do it for more than 2 weeks, then don’t even bother trying it out.

Instead, focus on tiny changes in your present diet and as always add in physical activity.  Just cutting out overly processed foods, sugary foods, or deep-fried foods in your daily diet can prompt healthy weight loss.

SARASOTA, Fla., Dec. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire/ – Larry Conrad went in for his annual physical on his 50th birthday.  during his exam, his doctor found swollen lymph nodes in his armpits and groin.  Conrad had a cough and said he’d lost weight because he ‘felt full all the time’.  his doctor ordered a series of tests, and Conrad was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, the most common type.  he rejected the standard chemotherapy protocol, and, like over half a million other Americans, traveled outside the US for cancer treatment.  According to TMD Limited, a medial tourism company, many patients seeking care in foreign medical centers are going specifically for cancer treatment.

Lymphoma is a cancer of the blood system that develops in the lymphatic system.  Lymph is a colorless, watery fluid that carries white blood cells and protects against infection and tumor growth.

Lymphoma symptoms include swollen, painless nodes in the neck, groin or armpit, unexplained weight loss, soaking night sweats, fevers, coughing, chest pain or trouble breathing, fatigue, and pain, swelling or a feeling of fullness in the abdomen.

According to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, there are currently 628,415 people living with Hodgkin’s in the US, and there will be 19,230 deaths from lymphoma this year.

Hodgkin’s lymphoma is found in lymph tissue in the neck, spleen, liver.  Hodgkin’s lymphoma is characterized by the presence of Reed-Sternberg cells – large cancerous cells in the lymphatic tissue.  Lymphomas can spread through lymph tissue and vessels and through the blood to other lymph nodes, lungs and liver. Yet this is the most curable form of lymphoma.

Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma develops in white blood cells called B-lymphocytes, or B-cells.  When these cells become abnormal, they multiply rapidly and can spread to all parts of the body.  Although the cause is unknown, lymphomas usually develop in patients with weak immune systems.  Risk factors include being older, male, white and having an inherited immune disorder, auto immune disease, HIV/AIDS, Epstein-Barr virus, a history of helicobacter pylori infection, taking immune-suppressant drugs after an organ transplant, pesticide exposure, a diet high in meats and fat, and a prior lymphoma diagnosis (recurrence).

Conrad had the recommended tests – a bone marrow aspiration and biopsy of the blood, marrow, bone fragments and lymph nodes, labs and CT/PET/MRI scans to see if the cancer had spread. 

Conventional treatment includes radiation, chemotherapy, watchful waiting, high dose chemotherapy with bone marrow stem cell transplants and vaccines.  According to the National Institutes of Health, US spending on Lymphoma treatment will exceed 10.2 billion dollars this year.

Conrad researched these treatments.  he understood the side effects of prolonged, high dose chemo, and was afraid he would be too sick from the treatments to work.  he needed to work to keep his insurance.   he learned that taking cells from his own bone marrow was risky because the cells might contain cancer.  a bone marrow transplant from a donor, besides being a very painful procedure, poses a danger of infection and rejection.  before a donor transplant, his body would have to be ‘conditioned’ by chemotherapy to suppress his immune system.  in up to 50% of patients, the transplant causes a serious attack by the patient’s own immune system, which can be life threatening.  To avoid this, patients must take steroids, methotrexate, cyclosporine, tacrolimus and monoclonal antibodies.  To someone who did not even take aspirin, this drug regime was overwhelming.

Conrad did not want his family to watch him suffer through conventional treatments, and he needed to supervise his small business to support his family.  he began researching alternative treatments, and after weeks of perusing websites and reading patient blogs, he found a small private clinic that offered aggressive natural treatments that had no side effects.

The images taunt us from women’s mags, TV, the movies: svelte Hollywood celebs posing in impossibly tight dresses, not a bra-strap bulge, muffin or paunch in sight. How do they do it? Is it the cabbage-soup diet, lemon detox, high protein, low carb or simply not eating?

Less than eight weeks after giving birth, Victoria Beckham squeezed back into a pair of size-zero skinny pants and tottered off on skyscraper heels to shop in Los Angeles.

If Victoria has a secret, she’s not telling. neither are Nicole Richie or Katie Holmes, nor any of the other celebs who appear to pop back to size zero days after giving birth. In Hollywood, surplus fat is about as welcome as a cockroach in a cupcake.

In the real world, plenty of mortals struggle with weight gain and everyone has their pet weight-loss method, from forking out for pricey gym memberships or signing up with a diet company to swilling down litres of water, swapping butter for olive oil or eating a big bowl of cereal for breakfast instead of eggs.

but Auckland nutritionist MaryRose Spence, the author of Size Does Matter, says many people’s weight-loss efforts are derailed by common myths. People keep hearing the same old messages about weight loss and, in some cases, they are the wrong messages.

“People think food for general healthy eating is the same as food for weight loss, and it’s not.”

With more than 65 per cent of New Zealanders overweight or obese, the messages need to change, she says.

Breakfast

People trying to lose weight may be doing themselves a disservice by starting the day with breakfast cereal. Because cereal is a carbohydrate, it does not give lasting energy, Spence says, prompting snacking later, particularly for people with a high muscle mass who process carbohydrates quickly. Toasted muesli is high in sugar and oils and loaded with kilojoules.

Most cereals are promoted in a way that makes people think they are the perfect food, she says.

“They can be high in fibre and low in fat, but do they keep you feeling full for long enough?”

Spence recommends adding protein, such as baked beans or eggs, to the first meal of the day. “You will get much better appetite satisfaction if you include protein.”

and everyone should eat breakfast. “If you wake up and you are not hungry, you have eaten too much from 4pm the day before.”

Water

Most people should drink 1.5 litres of water a day minimum during summer and a litre during winter, Spence says. “But over-drinking won’t do you any good. it just results in additional trips to the toilet, and possibly a loss of water-soluble vitamins.”

AUT University Professor Elaine rush agrees there is evidence of people drinking too much water. “Advertising does work. There are all the myths that go with bottled water.” rush says people can gauge whether they’re drinking enough fluid by the colour of their urine.

Carbohydrates and protein

Restricting carbohydrates in meals is not sustainable, Spence says. “There are people who never have potato at night but you find the meat portion just gets a bit bigger, and that actually contains more calories.”

anyone who drops carbohydrates from two meals a day will notice they are tired by the end of a week on the diet, she says. “It doesn’t meet enough needs nutritionally.”

While eating more protein is good, Spence says recent studies show a small increase in the amount of protein noticeably reduces the number of calories eaten overall, but too much protein quickly leads to weight gain.

a good rule is to eat half a plate of vegetables, a quarter of carbohydrates and a quarter of protein, says rush. Protein shakes and meal replacements also get the thumbs down. “There’s a strong relationship between chewing your food and increased appetite satisfaction,” Spence says.

rush says eating plans should be about quality of life. “It doesn’t matter how good the quality of the petrol you put in the tank is, it’s getting it away from the kerb that matters. you need to be able to function.”

The gym

Slogging away for hours at the gym is unlikely to make a lot of difference to weight-loss efforts, Spence says.

“You can do a lot of exercise, but unless you get the food right, nothing will happen.” once people are carrying extra body fat, exercise is not as effective as many think. Ideally, people should go for a brisk walk for 30 minutes a day.

“Any longer than 35 minutes a day may just make you hungry.”

Dr Geraldine Poynter, who refers clients to Spence, says people find the idea of a half-hour walk more palatable. “A short, brisk walk is so achievable.”

Good fats

In terms of weight loss, it doesn’t matter if they are “good” or “bad” fats – it’s all bad if you eat too much.

Says Spence: “When you look at fresh salmon, seeds, avocado, overweight people think this is good for them but they are loaded with calories.” Poynter says the information she learned from Spence was a surprise.

“I thought we were meant to have a lot of Omega-3, so I was eating salmon. She says it is better to eat canned salmon because it is not so fatty. at medical school we got so little nutrition information.”

Low GI

The glycaemic index has been a buzzword in weight loss in recent years, as it indicates how long it takes food to be broken down and start affecting blood sugar levels.

but Spence warns that people should not think that a low-GI diet, said to make you feel full longer, is a fast track to weight loss.

“There is certainly no harm in choosing low-glycaemic index foods. however, they are not a strong factor in successful weight loss.”

People still need to ensure they eat appropriate portion sizes. While low-GI food might give a more sustained release of energy throughout the day, it can be calorie-dense.

rush says: “Usually things with low GI are good for you because they contain things such as fibre, but it depends on the combination they are eaten in.”

One size does not fit all

People who are serious about weight loss should find out exactly how much body fat and muscle mass they are carrying. “Find out the truth about who you are feeding.” Spence uses a high-tech machine to assess muscle and fat mass, and metabolic rate to assess dietary needs. Versions of the machine are available at chemists.

No two bodies are the same – even two men of the same height and weight can be different, she says. put an All Black and an overweight man on the same diet and one will lose weight and the other will gain.
