A fad baby food diet linked to Hollywood star Jennifer Aniston has triggered warnings from a nutritionist.

Stacey Hancock, a personal trainer and nutritionist, said a client appeared at her Hamilton clinic last month and confessed to trying the odd diet. Hancock said she had words of advice for the next person who confessed to using baby food as a weight-loss panacea.

“I’d be sitting them down for a big hour-long session and teaching them how the body works and how weight loss works. They’re not going to maintain the weight loss they will get. and they really will make themselves quite sick.”

the diet is seen as a way of controlling calorie intake, Hancock said.

“If they’re having one jar of baby food, they’re constituting that as an entire meal. because the actual calories are so much lower than a normal meal, it’s putting them at a big calorie deficit to help them lose the weight.”

Hancock said some people cited convenience as a reason for adopting the fad, while others incorrectly believed the diet could provide them with enough nutrients.

“You’re giving your hormones such funny messages that they all of a sudden are not sure how to regulate your weight,” Hancock said.

the diet made headlines overseas when a British tabloid linked Aniston’s weight loss to a pureed food diet last year. She was reported to have lost about 15kg after trying an early version of the diet, but the Friends star denied those claims. the diet, reportedly invented by a personal trainer called Tracy Anderson, was also linked to Madonna.

Hancock was sceptical. “They all make the rounds. Last time it was lemon detox and now it’s this one.”

Each year many people fall victim to the hypes of certain diets.  A they scramble to shed the pounds of last year, they are looking for any possible diet plan for the easy way out.  Despite being forewarned about the negative consequences of fad diets, people still get duped by their gimmicks.  For 2012, don’t be a sucker for these horrible diet plans.  They will only backfire on you and leave you feeling horrible.  To help you spot out these fad diets, here are some pointers on how to distinguish a good diet versus a fad diet.

Any diet plan that has the following [fill in the blank] diet is sure to be a fad.  Take for example the grapefruit diet, the detox diet,  the junkfood diet, the Hcg diet,  the dukan diet, banana diet, the egg diet, the cookie diet, the leek diet, or the baby food diet.

Let’s be honest here, despite the fact that so-called “doctors” came up with these diet plans, a monkey with half a brain could also have come up with these “diet plans”.  The basic concept here is to pick out a somewhat healthy food and only consume that food.  Of course people will lose weight if they are only allowed to eat a certain amount of one type of food.

These diet plans are pitted for failure because unless you can stick to that diet for the rest of your life, you will not be able to maintain the weight you lose.  They are crash and burn diets, meaning if you are able to stick with it for a week or two, then yes you will lose weight, but don’t expect to keep the weight off.  People who try these types of diets and fail are also more likely to overeat once they are off the diet, causing them to gain more weight than they were previous to the diet.

These diets don’t work because they are quick fixes.  If you are genuinely interested in weight loss, you need to learn how to incorporate an entire food group into your diet.  It is impossible to expect someone to eat the same food, day after day.  It is also very damaging for your health as you will be deficient in other nutrients.

Everyone probably knows what the master cleanse diet is; perhaps you’ve even considered it or attempted to try it out.  Whatever the case may be, these diets has a similar concept as the diet previously mentioned.  The general idea is to only drink a specific type of liquid (apple vinegar water, cranberry juice, lemon juice, etc) and eat steamed veggies or fruit.

The thinking is that this diet of only liquids will flush the toxins out of your body.  If you are only consuming veggies and diluted cranberry juice, of course you will encounter weight loss.  However, this is a diet that is horrible for your body.  Essentially you are starving yourself and your body of nutrients it needs to maintain normal everyday functions.

Like the fill in the blank diet, the liquid diet is a short-term diet.  Most people are able to do it for a couple of days.  Stars like Beyonce used this diet for two weeks to drop 20 pounds or so for her movie Dream Girls.  Despite the fact that she got to the weight she needed to be, she does not recommend this diet.  People who are able to lose some weight while on the short-term diet find themselves gaining it back once they are off of it.

Generally, any weight loss plan that claims an instantaneous drop in weight is most likely to be a scam.  Before you nose dive into the newest weight loss plan, ask yourself if this is something that you can see yourself sticking with.  If you don’t think you can do it for more than 2 weeks, then don’t even bother trying it out.

Instead, focus on tiny changes in your present diet and as always add in physical activity.  Just cutting out overly processed foods, sugary foods, or deep-fried foods in your daily diet can prompt healthy weight loss.

SARASOTA, Fla., Dec. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire/ – Larry Conrad went in for his annual physical on his 50th birthday.  during his exam, his doctor found swollen lymph nodes in his armpits and groin.  Conrad had a cough and said he’d lost weight because he ‘felt full all the time’.  his doctor ordered a series of tests, and Conrad was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, the most common type.  he rejected the standard chemotherapy protocol, and, like over half a million other Americans, traveled outside the US for cancer treatment.  According to TMD Limited, a medial tourism company, many patients seeking care in foreign medical centers are going specifically for cancer treatment.

Lymphoma is a cancer of the blood system that develops in the lymphatic system.  Lymph is a colorless, watery fluid that carries white blood cells and protects against infection and tumor growth.

Lymphoma symptoms include swollen, painless nodes in the neck, groin or armpit, unexplained weight loss, soaking night sweats, fevers, coughing, chest pain or trouble breathing, fatigue, and pain, swelling or a feeling of fullness in the abdomen.

According to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, there are currently 628,415 people living with Hodgkin’s in the US, and there will be 19,230 deaths from lymphoma this year.

Hodgkin’s lymphoma is found in lymph tissue in the neck, spleen, liver.  Hodgkin’s lymphoma is characterized by the presence of Reed-Sternberg cells – large cancerous cells in the lymphatic tissue.  Lymphomas can spread through lymph tissue and vessels and through the blood to other lymph nodes, lungs and liver. Yet this is the most curable form of lymphoma.

Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma develops in white blood cells called B-lymphocytes, or B-cells.  When these cells become abnormal, they multiply rapidly and can spread to all parts of the body.  Although the cause is unknown, lymphomas usually develop in patients with weak immune systems.  Risk factors include being older, male, white and having an inherited immune disorder, auto immune disease, HIV/AIDS, Epstein-Barr virus, a history of helicobacter pylori infection, taking immune-suppressant drugs after an organ transplant, pesticide exposure, a diet high in meats and fat, and a prior lymphoma diagnosis (recurrence).

Conrad had the recommended tests – a bone marrow aspiration and biopsy of the blood, marrow, bone fragments and lymph nodes, labs and CT/PET/MRI scans to see if the cancer had spread. 

Conventional treatment includes radiation, chemotherapy, watchful waiting, high dose chemotherapy with bone marrow stem cell transplants and vaccines.  According to the National Institutes of Health, US spending on Lymphoma treatment will exceed 10.2 billion dollars this year.

Conrad researched these treatments.  he understood the side effects of prolonged, high dose chemo, and was afraid he would be too sick from the treatments to work.  he needed to work to keep his insurance.   he learned that taking cells from his own bone marrow was risky because the cells might contain cancer.  a bone marrow transplant from a donor, besides being a very painful procedure, poses a danger of infection and rejection.  before a donor transplant, his body would have to be ‘conditioned’ by chemotherapy to suppress his immune system.  in up to 50% of patients, the transplant causes a serious attack by the patient’s own immune system, which can be life threatening.  To avoid this, patients must take steroids, methotrexate, cyclosporine, tacrolimus and monoclonal antibodies.  To someone who did not even take aspirin, this drug regime was overwhelming.

Conrad did not want his family to watch him suffer through conventional treatments, and he needed to supervise his small business to support his family.  he began researching alternative treatments, and after weeks of perusing websites and reading patient blogs, he found a small private clinic that offered aggressive natural treatments that had no side effects.
