It’s not fair is it? You make a huge effort to quit smoking and then within days, on top of all the cravings, the bad temper, the headaches and sore throat, you develop a hacking cough. It’s not surprising that we end up taking up smoking again after a week or so is it I mean, what’s the point in trying to quit smoking if this is what we can look forward to?

So why do we cough? Well it’s quite a straight forward explanation, and actually it’s very positive in the process of quitting smoking. What is happening is that microscopic hairs in the lungs that are responsible for brushing out toxins and particles are thankfully beginning to function again. Known as Cilia, these hairs are very sensitive and are rendered useless by smoke and in particular tobacco smoke. The lungs over a period of time become clogged up by tar and chemical deposits.

While this sounds like a good thing, clearly long term, the Cilia not functioning is very bad for the lungs and body. As these deposits gather and remain in place, they effect the prime function of the lungs which is to transfer oxygen into the bloodstream replenishing the vital organs.

During the healing process the coughing should begin to lessen and after a month or so the Cilia should be fully functional again.

Removing tar and toxins from the lungs is a critical part of any smoker finally quitting smoking. In a sense it ends the relationship between the smoker and the cigarette and I suppose like any strong relationship smoking needs closure.

The continuous mental and physical battle I fought only eased when I discovered the lung detox. Finally my cravings subsided and then eventually disappeared. I had already spent time and money on the usual methods such as gum and patches but they just didn’t hit the spot.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure some people find those techniques perfectly adequate but maybe I’m just harder to convince. I’ve always been an awkward so and so:)

I was so desperate to quit for my families sake. My wife had managed to quit when she was pregnant with my young daughter and had never started again. She didn’t exactly nag me but I could tell that she hoped I would quit. Then of course there was my beautiful young daughter who I looked at and I just knew that it was the right thing to do.

If I didn’t quit my 40 a day habit I might not be around to see her children, or worse I may just end up being ill and just a burden on her in years to come.

I think I have figured out why a lung detox helped me so much. If the toxins that form and perpetuate the habit of smoking are quickly removed from the body, then it stands to reason that the process of quitting smoking is going to be much easier.

Well it actually went even further than that. What I wasn’t expecting was the uplifting effect it had on my whole mental and physical self. Within days of beginning the program my lungs just felt less tight and the terrible cough that I had developed finally began to subside. The transformation was quite unbelievable.

There are some minor side effects that I was aware of and ready for but it was really only a mild feeling of sickness and a headache but I was so excited by the thought of cleaning out my lungs I just put up with it and would go through it again…not that I ever intend to start smoking again.

Would I recommend a lung detox. Without question I think I’d still be a smoker now without it.
