Question by Bilbo Baggins: Why are humans the only species that pollutes to the detriment of life? Can’t blame that on God can we?
Since all other life on this planet is unaware of wastes they create,…….then why is it never a detriment to earths ecological system?
It is a living mechanical circulatory system isn’t it? It shows there is an organized design of a Supreme Creator.
Most animals and fish contribute waste to their environments that are essentially the same as human waste (fecal matter laden with bacteria and reduced compounds). If the population of an environment exceeded the capability of the environment to neutralize or at least tolerate those wastes, certain organisms will begin to die. This limit is known as the “carrying capacity” of the environment. In general, nature is wise enough to not naturally reach this limit in most instances, such that most systems can self regulate themselves and avoid reaching this limit.
There are examples of individual organisms that can excrete specific pollutants or toxins into an environment, usually as a defense mechanism. There are also plenty of examples of organisms that can detoxify and store pollutants from an environment in their bodies, making the overall environment “safer” (until the organism dies, at which point some toxins can be re-released to the environment).
Just What ARE Humans Thinking?……….
Affected people: 275,000
Pollutants: Organic chemicals, oil, heavy metals including mercury.
Source: Petrochemical and industrial sites
Affected people: 2,600,000
Pollutants: Hexavalent chromium and other metals
Source: Chromite mines and processing
Affected people: 140,000
Pollutants: Lead and other heavy metals
Source: Mining and processing
Affected people: Initially 5.5m, now disputed
Pollutants: Radioactive dust
Source: Meltdown of reactor core in 1986
Affected people: 300,000
Pollutants: Chemicals
and toxic by-products, including Sarin and VX gas. Also lead, phenols.
Source: Cold War-era chemical weapons manufacturing. The principal site of chemical weapons production during the Cold War, Dzerzinsk is now a centre of chemical manufacturing. Over a period of 70 years until 1998, 300,000 tons of chemical waste were dumped, leaching almost 200 chemicals into groundwater. The drinking water is heavily contaminated and the life expectancy for men is just 42.
Pollutants: Air pollution – particulates, sulphur dioxide, heavy metals (nickel, copper, cobalt, lead, selenium), phenols, hydrogen sulphide.
Source: The mining and processing of nickel and other related metals.
The snow is black in Norilsk, and 16 per cent of child deaths at the former Siberian slave labour camp are caused by respiratory illnesses related to the city’s mining operations. Residents at the world’s largest heavy metals smelting complex suffer a horrifying range of illnesses including respiratory illnesses and lung cancer
. Birth defects are common.
