It’s my first big holiday in two years and already I’m banned from drinking coffee and alcohol as well as eating chocolate or sugars of any kind.

For starters, guests get the full run of facilities and never have to lift a finger or to think, other than choose what tracksuit might be acceptable enough to wear to dinner.

The purpose-built health retreat is on sprawling, high-set acreage tucked away in the heart of the NSW Hunter Valley, where the air is fresh, the mood serene and hardly a gravel-crunch of a car can be heard.

Next up was a choice between a 4km walk around part of the nearby golf course, or deep water running in the pool.

And all of this before breakfast at 8.

Each day’s program was packed with organised activities designed to get us moving and, importantly to the Golden Door’s philosophy, to set us up with the knowledge to stay healthy and fit.

Equally you could choose to do nothing all day but lie by the pool with a good book. But that would be cheating.

As the meals began on day one, and the water flowed (with many of us wishing for a wine-turning miracle of Biblical proportions), so did the conversation.

Guests hailed from far and wide, and all walks of life, but with a common aim – to detox, get fit or simply enjoy time out from frazzled lives.

There was also much talk about the food, so raw and whole was it that we wondered aloud how many laxatives were being slipped in.

But of course that’s the point.

The stripped-back fare works almost immediately to remove toxins from the body.

Many a light-hearted plot was hatched as to how to ‘escape’ the retreat, such is the irony that it is set squarely in NSW wine country.

And, like giggling Catholic school borders, much thought was given to what contraband might be purchased during an unauthorised breakout and slipped back in unnoticed.

The Golden Door Elysia bills itself as 5-star, and the fitness and spa facilities, as well as the detailed health programs, most certainly are.

The program would not be what it is without the knowledgeable, supportive and hugely enthusiastic staff.

The eight-year-old retreat’s rooms, though, could benefit from a small makeover, and the meals – while succeeding very well at their detoxing purpose – fell well short of luxury ethos.
