Question by brainstewie: Foods allowed during detox?
I’m basically doing a detox with cabbage soup being the base of it, but obviously I’m still hungry, I know that you can have fruits, veggies, and brown rice..but is there anything else..like possibly pickles? I’ve heard that they are a “free food,” but I don’t know if the vinegar is okay during detox?

“Detox” is a make-believe treatment, so do whatever you want. There is no medical or scientific basis for it.

Very much so(:

Give your answer to this question below!

Our modern lifestyle can leave us feeling lethargic, bloated, stressed out and even at times a little guilty. A regular detox can make all the difference.

There is more than one way to detox and finding one that works for you and using it on a regular basis can do wonders for your body and mind. Detoxifying cleanses the physical body, re-invigorates the whole system right down to a cellular level and supplies us with a natural energy boost which has a great affect on our body, clears the cobwebs out of our mind and gives us a feeling of being well.

Even if you are fairly health conscious already, detoxifying is still important as none of us can avoid the pollutants of modern life entirely. Being stressed, as most of us are produces acids and waste products in the body that are best dealt with regularly to keep us healthy. The benefits of detoxing are increased alertness, vitality, vigour, improved immunity, higher libido and a younger look.

Exercise and Detox “If the detoxification program is combined with a sensible exercise program, then as well as the known benefits of a general detox, there may be additional benefits like reduced cellulite and loss of weight,” says a leading nutritionist. Getting rid of toxin build-up can be quite liberating, although you must expect to put in some work. Detoxifying requires some commitment and discipline, and yes, that means looking past the chocolates, the caffeine and the garlic bread just to name a few of the typically restricted foods.

Side effects Detox can produce some less than pleasant side effects. When starting out people may feel fatigue, nausea and even end up with some diarrhoea as toxins are expelled from the body. Headaches are also quite common as our systems go through withdrawal from caffeine and refined sugar. Symptoms vary according to your diet, living conditions and the amount of toxins you have.

There are many products on the market that promise to clean out your system in a few weeks, give you more energy and improve the function of the kidneys, liver, bowel and stomach. They come in different shapes, sizes and prices, and while there are a few radical programs, others are quite feasible and there are even some you can literally sleep through.

Detox dietary programs Pharmacy shelves reveal a range of products available for those wanting to embark on a home detox program. As with anything there are the good ones and the not so good ones, we have a detox program that we recommend and it features a complete nutritional support system that provides your body with the optimum nutrition and metabolic support while you are detoxing.

Fasting: One of the more popular forms is the juice fast with various length programs from a few days to a few weeks. These plans can be found on the internet, magazines and books, but if you’re going to go radical, it’s recommended you first consult a naturopath, nutritionist or other health professional before you start.

Therapeutic Detox There are also many treatments promising to give you the ‘ultimate’ detox, however many of these are overpriced and do not give you the benefits of a true detox. One therapeutic approach that I do recommend is the iDetox Ioncleanse Foot Spa. If you can find a practitioner near you, this is a great way to enhance any detoxification program that you decide on and for some it is all they will need.

MY VIEWS ON DETOX To detox is to stop consuming unhealthy foods, beverages, stimulants and drugs for a period of time to improve overall health. It is also important to minimise exposure to environmental toxins as much as possible. It also helps to speed the bodies ability to remove toxins through a dietary approach such as extra fibre and therapies that pull toxins out of the body.

It also pays to remember that to keep detox symptoms like headaches, painful muscles and skin break outs to a minimum you will need to take things slowly. Drink lots of water to help flush the cells.

What are the benefits of detox? Doing a detox forces you to take a good look at what you are eating and the type of lifestyle you lead, and then evaluate whether that is helping your health, or hindering it. In our clinics we see many patients with conditions such as fatigue, allergies, insomnia, frequent infections, excess weight and skin problems. Each of these conditions can be greatly improved with a good detox.

But what of the opposing view?

The human body has inbuilt detoxification mechanisms, designed to remove toxins from our body via our bowels, urine, breath and perspiration. This would function well enough in an ideal, stress-free, unpolluted world but we do not live in such a world. In today’s times we are exposed to much higher levels of chemicals, heavy metals and stress than any generation before us, with new challenges such as food irradiation, genetically modified foods, microwave ovens and an increasing amount of artificial sweeteners.

Where does exercise fit into a good detox program? Exercise is a fantastic way to speed up the removal of toxins from the body because it improves circulation, stimulates the lymphatic system to remove waste from the bloodstream, and many toxins are excreted through perspiration. Exercise also increases energy levels and motivation to eat well and look after ourselves. However while doing a detox, we strongly recommend that people exercise at a lower intensity than usual.

A great way to exercise the lymphatic system and therefore aid detoxification on a regular basis is via vibrational exercise. This kind of exercise first came into vogue during the seventies with the ‘rebounder’ and now we have the ‘fit ball’ both of these take advantage of the bouncing effect to cause our cells and circulation to vibrate.

Now however, you can buy machines much like a treadmill, that vibrate your whole body. Check out our website for more information on these amazing machines. I personally use ours as often as possible, usually daily, you can literally feel the energy in your body and almost feel your cells vibrating. One of the added benefits is that they also exercise your body and help you to move fat out, and one of our regular fitness centre members swears that two sessions a week rid him of his persistent sciatic pain.

EAT MORE: Pungent foods like those found in ginger and coriander are great for the digestion and so help the liver to detox. The Liver is one of our organs of detoxification. Sour foods are also specific for the liver (grapefruit, lemon, pears, plums and mango). Peppermint tea, celery, broccoli, seaweed, chamomile, rye and wheatgrass are good. Generally, your detox diet should be made of good fats, fresh fish and lots of vegies.

EAT LESS: All preservatives and chemicals. Processed and refined foods, such as white stuff (anything refined: white flour, white bread, white rice, etc..) and sugar. All junk food, processed oils, rich and heavy food.

NONE AT ALL: I don’t think that you should particularly deprive your of anything. But it’s good to be mindful of the foods listed above.

MY TIPS: Drink lots of water do gentle exercise and don’t rush into anything too quickly. Think of detox as a change of lifestyle, rather than a quick-fix solution.

Although there are a lot of issues concerning detox dieting, there continues to be a lot of young people using this as an addition to their dieting regimen.  They detox to lose weight, stay fit and get rid of body toxins the easy way. And why shouldn’t they? The procedure of detoxifying your body is not as difficult as exercising like crazy however it isn’t that easy either. Detoxing requires a lot of conviction and will power to really finish the cleansing process.

There are several different detoxing methods.  Choosing one over another will depend on you, the type of diet you can handle and what you can actually commit to for the success of staying fit.

-There is the raw food diet plan where you eat only uncooked food;
-The diuretic diet, which uses natural diuretics to relieve fluid retention;
-The fast trucks detox diet, which is an 11-day detox diet,
-The liver cleansing diet to help those with poor liver function; and so on.
-The lemonade diet or master cleanse which allows you to drink a special drink for up to 10 days.
-There are also some new experts in the field that made new forms of detox dieting to suit almost everyone’s preferences.

Those who are in the process of choosing a detox diet plan, should be eating very clean prior to doing a detox diet. During a detox, in order to properly cleanse your body, depending on the detox you chose, you will have to eat fresh or frozen fruits, vegetables, brown-rice, beans, nuts and seeds but not butters or peanuts and peanut butter, extra-virgin oil and may drink herbal or green tea, pure unsweetened fruit and vegetable juice, rice milk, lemon water and of course water. The type of food and drinks that you consume during a detox, will all depend on the type of detox plan you select for yourself.  Water will definitely be part of your detox dieting since you have to drink a minimum of 8 glasses per day.

Before you start, it is better not to have any social plans or events for a while.  You will need to totally concentrate on your diet plans since the process may also give you some side effects.  Some side effects may be that you to feel a little lethargic, or have nausea some times and you may feel a small amount of mental irritability.  You have to expect some discomfort because a detox is riding your body of toxins.  These side effects just mean that the detox is working.  Just make sure you listen to your body because discomfort should not include pain and should not persist for a long period of time.  Those symptoms will eventually go away after some time. All you need is to take in a lot of relaxation and sleep to help you with your detox dieting. After having sacrificed for the duration of the cleanse, you will feel more energetic, have more power and alertness to do your day-to-day routine.

It is also necessary to consult your naturopath before deciding to use any of the techniques mentioned. They can provide you with good advice if you need some. Although, it is still a known good fact that natural ways of dieting are better than those artificial methods. That is where detox dieting comes into place.

There are many ways to detox your body. There are herbals formulas, oxygen formulas, liquid herbal formulas, water detox, foot patch detox, enemas, and colonics just to name a few. There is no perfect one to use. They all have their benefits. It wouldn’t be recommended to use more than one at the same time, but you could try different ones each time you detox and see which one gives you the best result.

Detoxing isn’t a one-time, quick fix to erase all the evil things you have ever done to your body. Preparing your body for any detoxification plan is important. You need to get your body ready for the release of toxins it is about to experience. You should also consider making your detox part of your spring and fall cleaning.

If you’ve never tried natural detoxification before, and here are a few tips to help you prepare.

Water

Begin by increasing your water intake to a level that is about half your body weight in ounces. If you weigh 200 pounds, focus on drinking 100 ounces of water equally distributed throughout the day. This will help begin to flush toxins out.

Smoking

Nicotine is a toxin. So it only makes sense that if we are working the existing nicotine toxins out of your body, we shouldn’t be putting them back in at the same time. When you decide to quit smoking, doing a detox is a very helpful approach to supplement your efforts.

Alcohol

If you regularly consume alcohol, your detox will be much more effective and less stressful on your liver if you abstain during your detox. Again, the same principal applies as with smoking. Alcohol is a toxin to your liver. If we are working to cleanse your liver, we don’t want to put the toxins right back in.

Over-the-counter drugs

Many people are addicted to OTC medications, with painkillers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen at the top of the list. Studies by researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center found that more than one-third of 300 cases of liver failure were associated with excessive use of acetaminophen. They also blamed excess acetaminophen use on liver injury in over one-third of 307 other cases. If you regularly use these types of OTC medications, it is important to discontinue use of them during a detox unless prescribed by your doctor.

As with any detox, it is important to check with your doctor and advise him of the detox program you are planning to use and make sure it is advisable based on your health and current medications. Some herbs can react with medications to make them ineffective.

Detox Foot Pads is one of the best and easy ways to do a detox and cleanse your body. They are placed on the soles of your feet, usually before you go to bed and the pads will remove toxins from the body. You may see the pads change in color from a white to a dark brown color. This is a good sign that the toxins have been removed from the body. Over time you will see the pads go lighter in color and this is a good sign to know when to stop using the pads.

Detox foot pads work similar to the osmosis pressure from plants. Plant roots deliver water to the branches of the tree and when the detox foot pads are placed on your feet, the heat from the pads absorb sweat from the soles of your feet. Make sure you don’t wear the pads for more than 8 hours

When our bodies have too much toxins it can make us very sick and unwell and you may have symptoms such as a low immune system, lack of energy and feeling very tired.

By using detox foot pads these symptoms will gradually go away and you will be feeling a lot better with much more energy. On the sole of your feet their are points which respond to every organ of your body and by placing the pads on the responding area you will be removing toxins from that organ.

Detox foot pads always use natural ingredients such as tourmaline, bamboo vinegar and chitin and are the easiest and are hassle free. By using detox foot pads as your choice of detox therapy, you do not have to follow any confusing diet requirements and you know toxins are being removed from your body whenever you use the pads.

They are also the cheapest way of doing a detox at home which usually cost around $20 and can be bought online to see if they are effective for you.

You may not be aware but people come in contact with hundreds even thousands of toxins just in every day life. You eat them, touch them, and even breathe them in. They are everywhere and many of them end up stored in our bodies. They are actually unable to be processed through the body because there is not enough of the nutrients and often times even enough water in the body in order to be processed and removed.

In these cases the body wraps to toxins and stores it in surprisingly fat and other tissue. As these toxins build you become more fatigued, you may find that you have muscle pains and aches, muscles will become tired faster and you will have a general lack of energy. This means that there is some fat on most people that is strictly there to protect your body from the toxins it was unable to remove.

This is where a full body detox comes in. These toxins and the lack of proper nutrients within the body can lead to a number of serious health problems. A full body detox can be the answer to feeling better as well as help you to lose weight. There are a couple of different ways that you can do a full body detox. The first thing to remember about these is that they are designed to cover the entire body. When looking into full body detox programs you are going to want a program that is going to last for a period of time. You want to remove the toxins slowly from your body. Full body detox programs that attempt to move toxins through the body quickly can actually be quite unpleasant and cause their own set of problems.

In order to make a full body detox work for your benefit and not send you to the facilities or send you to bed feeling sick you need to prepare your body and make sure that you have a full body detox that will work at a pace that will let your body recover its own flow. Nutrients are essential during a full body detox. You are going to want to make sure that you have more than just a multi-vitamin. There are a number of nutrients that aid the body in doing a detox. These can be purchase separately at any health food or nutritional supply store.

You should start taking these before you begin the full body detox in order to help build up what you are going to need in your body once you start the full body detox. Next, make sure to wean yourself off junk food, caffeine and sodas. You may also want to work on any other habits just as tobacco use and cut back on any medications that are not seen as medically necessary. You may also want to increase the amount of water you drink.

You will want to look for a full body detox program that teaches meditation, deep breathing and techniques such as skin brushing as these are all elements of a full body detox.

If you are like most people, you have probably read in more than a few places that detoxification of the body can do wonders for a variety of medical conditions and if you have checked into you have probably found that there are a variety of elements that make doing a home body detox less than appealing. In fact, most home body detox program outlines sound down right unpleasant, painful and often times leave you feeling incredibly ill for several days. Of course, with an outline like that who is going to want to do it on a regular basis, there are other ways however, to detox the body and do it in such a way that you only feel how much better you feel and you are not dealing with the harmful and often painful side effects.

This is not to say that you will feel no discomfort. You probably will feel some as your body starts to release the toxins that you have had built up within the body. It will not however be as bad as the detoxification programs that you read about that involve taking diuretics and purgatives and fasting.

There are however safe home body detox programs that can provide you with the benefits of detoxification with only minimal discomfort. This is a longer program than what most people think of as a detox. Most people think of the weekend detox program or the ones that last only a week. Studies have shown however that detoxification of the body in order for it to be complete takes a total of 3 months and involves significantly more than doing the harsh purge detox programs that currently hold popularity.

A home body detox program should take 28 days. It should be done in such a way that symptoms from the detoxification are kept to a minimum. After all, who is going to want to maintain a diet and program to cleanse the body if it makes you feel worse than before you started.

Do not just jump right into a home body detox program. Due to the high levels of processed foods, carbohydrates and caffeine that most people intake jumping right in can cause serious side effects as you go through withdrawal from these substances. It is best if you start several weeks earlier and begin lowering your intake of these substances until you no longer crave them. This will make it easier for your body to handle the home body detox program safely. It also makes the side effects of a home body detox program significantly milder making it easier to maintain and easier to live life even while you are going through the detoxification process.

There are some other things to consider as well to make sure that your home body detox program is both successful and contains the least amount of issues when it comes to side effects. Remember to drink plenty of water when you are on a home body detox program. Even the mildest of home body detox programs are going to be hard on the body.

By drinking plenty of water during a home body detox plan, you can avoid the side effects such as headaches and many times muscle aches and pains.
