Katherine asks, "Do you suggest ever doing a detox diet? I’ve seen them for the liver and colon and wondered if they really work?"
Detoxification diets have been discussed and used for centuries. while I am not considered an Alternative Medicine Physician, I have been in practice for many years, and during this time period, have been exposed to many patients with great interest in Alternative Medicine. In my opinion, a good physician will investigate all forms of medicine to help advise their patients in good medical care. with that said, I will also say that I am not a supporter of radical medical treatments, and will always advise moderation no matter what the question is.
So let’s look at what the body does naturally to detox itself. The digestive tract is the entrance and exit of the body. If you put good things into the tract, the body will be exposed to less toxic material, and will need less radical treatments. The liver and the bowels (small and large intestines) process the material we take in, and eliminate the solid waste products. The liquid waste products are processed by the kidneys, and so the urine is the way the body rids itself of impurities. you will notice that most detox diets target these systems, and in theory either reduce the intake of impurities, or increase the removal of the waste products.
Who should not try a Detox Diet?

Side Effects of Detox Diets:

As far as recommending a particular detox diet, I have to defer to practitioners who specialize in this area. there are hundreds of different diets, all aimed at specific areas. I will repeat what I said earlier, that is never do anything extreme. Moderation is the key to all medical advice. as always…Stay Healthy My Friends!
