It is that time of year again. I went into my local Wild Oats healthfood store to purchase some lemons, and the girl at the checkout counter just grinned. She knew what I was doing. Yup, you got it. The lemon diet a.k.a. “The Master Cleanser”. seems I am not the only one thinking about using it as my detox program of choice this month. almost makes me wonder if they up the price of lemons, just because they know what is coming! One year I even thought about buying a lemon tree, just in case.
But why do so many people gravitate toward the master cleanser, anyway? maybe it is all of the testimonials of their friends losing excess weight and starting to feel great for the first time in a long time. or perhaps they picked up Stanley Burroughs book and figured it seemed simple enough, not to mention all the incredible stories he shares of people gaining incredible health and healing. who wouldn’t want that? makes sucking up to a lemon diet quite tasty when you think about it!
Before joining the cult masses and and getting your t-shirt, I have a few things for you to consider as “food for thought”.
1 – How Long should Your Journey Last?
It is very important for you to be realistic in your expectations as to how long you can endure this famous lemon diet. If you have never spent one single day away from solid food, it will be pretty wretched to endure 10 days without it. Some people even go for the big 4.0. their first try. Not real smart. Not only is it a pretty impossible feat that could damage their health, they also end up getting down on themselves when they “fail” to accomplish this far out goal. And this damages their self esteem instead.
2 – are you Willing To Make Lifetime Adjustments?
If you want to have a detox program just so that you can go back to your same lifestyle of toxifying (I made that word up) yourself, you are doing yourself far more damage than not. In fact if you have not seriously considered how to make better choices for yourself, you’d best stay away. you see, after you give your body a break like that, and then put in some more garbage again, it will only hit you harder. And then the next time you want to detox, it will be a great deal more difficult.
3 – How well are you Willing To Prepare?
Before you go to the grocery store for your bushel of lemons, maple syrup and cayenne pepper, you have some other things to do first. One thing is cutting back, and then out, the caffeine. Cayenne is great for helping you to transition, but it won’t make the journey a walk in the park if you have been a heavy hitter on the lattes or soda. The same goes for sugar. The less you indulge before you embark on your detox program with the lemon diet, the smoother your time will be.
