Reflexology is an alternate form of medicine, which believes that locations on your feet correspond with parts of your body, and that massage and other forms of treatment for your feet can help with whole body health and detoxification. it has been used in medical practice for thousands of years in Eastern cultures and is today starting to gain a foothold in Western cultures as well. Reflexology methods applied to detoxification have proven to be particularly effective.

It is common knowledge that toxins will build up in your body from food we eat, the air we breathe and from many other environmental sources. if you don’t use some sort of detoxification procedure to get this bad stuff out of your system eventually it will cause health problems for you. Liver disease, cardiovascular complications, stomach problems and even infertility and impaired brain function can result from an excessive buildup of environmental toxins in your body. Traditional Western medicine, which relies heavily on surgical procedures and prescription medications, is often at a loss for how to deal with body detoxification. In fact, if you look at the extensive list of negative side effects for some prescription medications it makes you wonder if traditional Western medicine is helping with detoxification or simply making things worse.

In the face of this gap in Western medicine, and the increasing danger in our culture from toxins, a whole host of alternate forms of medicine have surfaced to try and deal with detoxification. Special diets, fasting, colon cleansing, spa treatments and herbal applications and supplements have become more popular with health conscious people trying to deal with detoxification. some are Western in origin, but most have Eastern roots. some seem to be nothing more than common sense, but others seem to be a bit surreal and bizarre.

Reflexology may be among the strangest of these concepts to our western way of thinking. how can parts of your foot correspond with organs in the rest of your body? how can doing something to your feet remove toxins from your heart, liver and kidneys? it may take the scientists hundreds of years to prove or disprove the claims of reflexology but if it works for you today isn’t that all that matters? the list of negative side effects from reflexology is pretty much non-existent and the potential benefits are significant.

So how exactly is reflexology used to remove toxins from our bodies? for thousands of years, Chinese and Japanese medical practitioners have known that certain tree root and trunk extracts can be placed on your body and be used to remove all kinds of ailments. Pain, infection, swelling, blood flow congestion and even toxins can be removed by applying a patch or plaster of herbs combined with these tree extracts.

Taking this knowledge one step further, several companies have developed self-adhesive herbal foot patches. You apply a pair of these to the soles of your feet at night before you go to bed, remove them, and throw them away when you get up in the morning. when you put them on at night they will be white but when you remove them in the morning they will be dirty looking. No, this isn’t dirt from your feet; it is toxins removed from your body. after a few weeks of doing this the patches you throw away in the morning will get cleaner and cleaner as there are less toxins to remove from your body. it is relatively cheap to try, easy to use, efficient, has no common negative side effects and if it works for you then that may be all that really matters.

Today I realized that because I was neglecting messages that my body was sending  me for too long, I am now lying in bed with influenza viruses in most cells of my respiratory tract. my body that is unconditionally serving me to do the things I love and I am passionate about was sending me signals of discomfort for months that I simply despised. like a child my body started to scream for attention and finally the flue knocked me down.

I’ve promised myself that I will walk as I talk and to show gratitude to every cell of my body I will do a Detox week.

Detox is not only removal of toxic substances from our body, but it is also a cleanse of our mind and connection with our soul with the ultimate goal  returning to homeostasis, where self healing processes are most powerful.

Detox allow the body to get rid of toxins from our daily diet, balancing and nourishing it. Physical symptoms like Intestinal irritation, body odor and bad breath after detox diminish, energy levels rise and anxiety decrease. As detox covers different realms of our life, it has also a big impact on our stress levels and experience of joy.

What is important to know before you start a detox week?

When you start a detox process is advised to have some more »me time« and stressful tasks or situations should be avoided. to make  possible new clothes enter in the wardrobe  first you need to clear the space from old ones. quite similar is with our body. In order to allow new energies, vibrations and health ENTER within us we first need to ELIMINATE everything that is not serving us anymore: habits, relationships, food, thoughts, possessions, positions,…

Sleep is an important part of detox process. Sleep is in other terms a healthy digestion of our daily life experiences, where we eliminate everything that is not nourishing. Sleep disturbance is a clear sign that we are carrying  some emotional burdens with us that is time to release. Journaling before bed can help you release thoughts that are occupying your mind in vain. when you let go of your toxic thoughts you start making the space for new more empowered ones to enter in, recreating the natural flow that is essential for  balance in nature.

We forget that our body has all the answers if we only listen to them.

In the next Blog I will describe how to do a detox in a step by step process in order to cleanse your body and mind as you deserve. see you around and don’t forget to reserve your spot In Designing Your true Self Course. It starts on April 12!

We’re all about healthy self image here at R29, and we consider ourselves to be pretty satisfied with our bodies overall, but even the healthiest among us will admit to having trouble spots we wish were just a little more trim (hello love handles!). the problem is, if you are already pretty in shape to begin with, it can be so tough to lose those last few pounds — they don’t call it a plateau for nothing.

We wanted to see if there were any new, smart ways to rev up your system to ditch those last few lbs. for good, so we asked fitness expert David Barton and nutrition guru Dr. Oz Garcia to share some of theirlittle-known tips for pushing your body past that weight-loss wall. from the best type of workout to outsmarting your appetite for overeating, read on for their best-kept diet and exercise secrets.

Do the Mediterranean Diet

All over the world, people subsist on diets that are much healthier than our usual meat and potatoes fare. Nutrition expert Dr. Oz Garcia points to people in the Mediterranean as a great example of the type of diet you should be following for optimal weight loss: fish, omega-rich oils, and lots of vegetables. “The leanest people around are those that eat a lot of seafood and fish,” he says. “Eat smaller fish like Alaskan salmon, which is rich in DMAE and omega-3′s, which help your metabolism and how your brain functions.”

In fact, Garcia says that foods that positively impact brain function directly impact your health and fitness decisions. Eating high-fat, starchy foods can cause you to be depressed or unfocused, screwing around with the areas of your brain that control satiety and your will to work out, says Dr. Garcia. Foods that have a chemical impact on the brain can damage the way you calibrate how much you eat and your body’s ability to control its weight. they can also make you lazy and make exercise seem unappealing. According to Dr. Garcia, the natural inclination of the human body is to exercise and part of that loss of interest can be attributed to a broken signaling system.

Conversely, eating feel-good foods that enhance your mood and boost brain function lead to an enhanced signaling system that helps your body better regulate how full you are and control cravings, plus helps you make good choices about your diet and exercise routine. Food is functional and food is fuel, so make sure you are putting the most efficacious and beneficial food in your system so your body can work at its peak performance level.

Think like A Bodybuilder

While you may view bodybuilding as all about gaining hulking levels of mass, a big part of the sport consists of lowering your body fat percentage. According to fitness expert David Barton, founder of David Barton Gym, those looking to lose weight in a hurry should adapt some of their pre-competition practices, like carb control.

Related offers for more info! Bodybuilders have turned the control of their carb intake into an art form. Eating high-glycemic carbs will cause your blood sugar and insulin release to seesaw, which causes your body to store fat, rather than lean muscle mass. By closely monitoring when and how many carbs you eat in the day, you can ensure your insulin levels stay flat and you don’t inadvertently put your body into fat-storing mode.

According to Barton, the best time of day to eat carbs is first thing in the morning, or right after you work out, as this is when they are less likely to turn into body fat and will be used instead as energy. the absolute worst time to eat carbs is right before bed because the sugars suppress the release of growth hormones, which the body needs to break down those fat cells. also, you use less calories when you are asleep, so there is less of a chance of burning them off before they can be stored as fat.

In terms of how much of your food should be carbs, Barton says that he recommends to clients looking to lose body fat that they should stick to 75-150 grams per day, not including fibrous carbs like vegetables. he does not suggest going any lower than that, as a low- or no-carb diet is ridiculously hard to stick to. “Once you go off that diet, and once you taste those carbs, you are on a mission — you are going toeat,” he says.

If you just can’t say no to carbs, Barton does have a few tricks up his sleeve to help you out. “One way to help ensure that carbs are directed into your muscles and liver, rather than fat cells, is to take an alpha lipoic acid supplement to help the body manage the distribution of carbohydrates. You can also take a high dose of capsulized cinnamon before eating a carb-heavy meal to blunt the insulin response, lessening the effect that insulin has of pulling the glucose into the fat cells and storing it as fat.”

Go into A Fluid Frenzy

You’ve probably heard that drinking lots of water can help you lose weight, but it turns out that when and how much you drink can directly affect your digestion. “Ideally, room temperature water should be consumed 30 minutes before a meal. cold water can suspend digestion, as can consuming water directly after a meal,” says Dr. Garcia. in fact, drinking too much water while you eat just dilutes your digestive enzymes, which slows down your system.

But water isn’t the only liquid that can help prime your body for weight loss — herbal teas are also great for getting your metabolism in prime working order. According to a recent article by Harper’s Bazaar, decaf oolong tea can increase your metabolism by 10 percent. Dr. Garcia prefers green tea for its “normalizing” effect on the brain — it helps you control cravings, soothe stress so you don’t resort to anxiety-driven eating, and helps lift your resting metabolic rate by three to four percent. Finally, peppermint tea is a great way to end a meal and stave off hunger — according to a study by the Wheeling Jesuit University, people who sniffed peppermint five days out of the week consumed 1,800 fewer calories in that week.

Dr. Garcia also recommends jump-starting your day by drinking a glass of room temperature water with lemon in it about a half hour before eating, to help detoxify your body. Hey, if it works for Cate Blanchett…

Get Hardcore With your Workout

Another way that bodybuilders keep those pounds off is by doing anaerobic activity. Barton says that in the past, people used to promote aerobic exercise as best for burning fat, but recent research has shown that a steady workout actually signals the body’s metabolism to store fat. That’s why interval cardio — mixing up short, intense bursts of anaerobic exercise with slower ones — helps you to burn calories more efficiently, and subsequently tells your body to burn fats during periods of rest.

This response can be tracked back to early man. Steady cardio was usually a sign of migrating to a new home or following food, so the brain would signal the body to store fat because it was going to be low on food. However, when the body was faced with short, intense bursts of movement, it was usually because it was avoiding a predator, so the brain would signal to the body that it needed to divert calories and sugar into the muscles to help it move quickly in order to survive. By putting that stress on your body with interval training, it tricks your body into using calories for energy, rather than storing it away for later use. It also ensures your body will burn fat even when you are done exercising.

“Your body is an adaptive mechanism. the stress and stimulus that it experiences constantly elicits change in your body. if those stresses become repetitive and stay the same, then your body will no longer have reason to adapt, change, and get stronger. this is the Overload Principle, which states that to affect change in the body a new, additional type of stimulus is required. so push yourself a little bit further and a little harder! Call upon your inner strength to go for those extra few reps past the point where you would have stopped, so your body can overcome a workload it is unaccustomed to,” advises Barton.

The ideal workout, according to Barton, should consist of 20 minutes of interval sprints using a 1:2 ratio of sprints for 30 seconds and walking or a light jog (depending on how fit you are) for one minute. Or, if you’re not a runner, try 21 minutes of intervals on the bike with 2 minutes at 80% resistance followed by a minute at 60% resistance. this should be repeated seven times.

Outsmart your Appetite

You may attribute your habit of cleaning your plate to your mom’s constant lectures about wasting food, but according to Dr. Garcia, this can actually be blamed on our primitive ancestors. “Humans are an apex predator — we reside on the top of the food chain because we have no natural predators of our own. We’re like sharks because just like them, we never stop eating. in caveman days, it was a highly competitive environment for food — if you saw food, you ate it right away because there was always someone else on your tail waiting to eat it if you didn’t. even though we found a more reliable source of calories, that gorging reflex didn’t go away, so when you pile a plate with food, your instinct tells you to eat it all — it’s evolutionary overdrive,” says Dr. Garcia.

That means that you need to outsmart your natural tendencies with tricks that help you eat less. Studies have shown that using smaller plates help you eat less, so put down the giant dinner plate and opt for a small salad plate instead. if you eat protein, you should have a portion about the size of your fist, and the rest of your plate should contain a large portion of vegetables and a smaller portion of carbs. if you already follow this regimen and are still having trouble losing weight, Dr. Garcia says to remodel your plate so that “three-quarters of your meal consists of vegetables. if you are eating out and plan to have a lot of food coming, start with a salad to slowly fill you up. Then when the entrée arrives, cut the portion in half and instead of having grains, double up on green vegetables.”

Another trick he recommends is to have a scoop of protein powder mixed with some water about two hours before your meal to help manage your appetite. “A snack a few hours before eating sometimes will leave you feeling more full then having an appetizer right before dinner,” he says. “It allows you sufficient time to digest your food and this will signal a feeling of satiety and keep you from filling up on bread.”

Finally, don’t linger at the dinner table or you’ll be tempted to continue nibbling. Leave the table as soon as you finish and move your attention onto something else, so that food is no longer on your mind. Once your attention shifts to something else, it will allow your body to truly signal it is full and keep you from craving something more.

Time for Some Heavy Lifting

Adding weight-lifting to your workout regimen is integral in helping you lose weight fast. “Weights can change the shape of the body and turn it into a fat-burning machine,” says Barton. “Strength training actually helps you burn fat for the next 24-36 hours after the workout.”

In addition, Barton says that strength training also gives you the most results in the shortest amount of time. “Intense strength training movements that use large muscle groups, sets of long duration, and that are explosive in nature create different biochemical effects, all of which induce fat loss and increases metabolism,” he says.

If time is limited, Barton suggests concentrating on the major muscle groups and doing as many big, compound movements as you can. these include things like squats, to firm up the legs and butt; shoulder presses, to round out the deltoids and shape the arms; Cable rows, to help strengthen the back and work on posture; and push-ups, to use your body weight as natural resistance. “Just 20-30 minutes of these types of exercise can be just as effective as a longer workout, given the proper intensity,” says Barton.

Say No To Wheat With every Meal

Okay, before everybody goes on the wheat defensive, hear us out: Weight loss and food at its simplest core comes down to cutting calories, and wheat products contain way more calories than things like veggies. while there is still a lot of debate on whether or not wheat and gluten are completely bad for you, there’s no question that wheat provides a large amount of calories, so it makes sense to cut back if you are looking to slim down.

“The problem isn’t eating wheat once in awhile,” says Dr. Garcia. “The problem is people consume one source of starch way more than any other.” if you’re having wheat with every meal — and that’s way easier to do than you may recognize — you’re getting the bulk majority of your calories from it, and this will cause those insulin spikes that will lead to weight gain. “We’re omnivores and we are designed to eat across many different food groups. the problem with wheat is that, like soy, it’s an estrogenic food, so it increases all the different metrics in your body that lead to weight gain. What we find sometimes, especially in men, is that even if they are on calorie-restrictive diets, the body is feminizing itself because of the hormone disruptive effect of flour. That’s why we are seeing those softer, bigger stomachs and man boobies,” says Garcia.

Cutting back on wheat is a lot easier than you think. You can switch out gluten products for things like millet, rice, sprouted grain, tapioca flour, and many vegetables. Garcia recommends switching out your turkey on rye for a sandwich made with cabbage leaves — the leaves are thick, so they can hold a lot, and the leaves have virtually zero calories.

Eat big after You Exercise

As mentioned before, Barton says the best time to eat carbs, or any big meal is immediately after you work out. Right after you exercise, having a large insulin spike is ok, because any carbs and calories you eat are much more likely to be absorbed back into the liver and muscles as a form of recuperation from the energy you just expended, rather than body fat.

Drop A Dress Size? There’s A Machine for That

Human nature is to look for the easy way out of difficult situations, and what could be easier than having someone zap away your love handles? the Liposonix is an ultrasound device that promises to make you one pants size smaller with just one hour-long treatment. It just received FDA clearance here in the U.S. as a non-surgical way to get rid of fat around your mid-section and thighs. Liposonix uses a high-intensity focused ultrasound that heats up to permanently destroy fat cells, without harming the skin — in essence it “melts” the fat away. these destroyed cells are removed by the body’s natural processes, transported to the liver by macrophages over a period of 8 to 12 weeks, leaving behind a more contoured waistline.

“The Liposonix treatment is for patients who are close to their ideal size and have stubborn, unwanted fat around their waistline that they just can’t seem to get rid of with diet and exercise,” says dermatologist Dr. Anne Chapas, one of the few doctors in the country who currently offer the treatment. According to Chapas, there are some general factors that can help you determine if you are an appropriate candidate: You must be able to “pinch-an-inch” (2.5 cm) of fat in the treatment area, have a body mass index (BMI) equal to or less than 30, have good overall health, and have realistic expectations about the results. just be ready to shell out some $$$ as this little miracle-worker does not come cheap: the treatment will set you back upwards of $1500, depending on the area you are treating.

For a number of years I have questioned and pondered what it means for our bodies to function optimally. With multiple family and friends being tested for allergies and intolerances, experiencing the weight yo-yo, various illnesses and disease, and living in a constant state of inflammation - this has become the ‘normal’ state for the body. But what if we started to become aware of what is happening in our bodies, tune into how we feel and when we feel things; take notice of our energy levels, aches and pains that we’ve come to tolerate, eating habits, and the most embarrassing… bowel movements!

In the years of schooling, reading books, attending presentations, internet searches, talking to friends, colleagues, and health practitioners – I have learned that one of the BEST things we can do for our bodies, after we start to recognize our own state of wellness, is to DETOX. Cleanse and eliminate the years of built up toxins from the body – and make space for health and healing!

What are toxins?

Poisons, regardless of origin or method of production; biotoxins, environmental toxins, emotional toxins, which have negative effects on the body.

Examples of toxic source: the air we breathe, food and water we ingest (processed foods: chemicals, colourants, flavours; alcohol; caffeine), smoking, pollution, medication, as well as Stress – which manifests into emotionally produced toxins.

Toxic build up can: cause illness and disease, depression, weight gain, acne, chronic fatigue, headaches and migraines, diabetes, high cholesterol and blood pressure – and these are just a few things; as toxicity creates imbalance in the body and has a ripple effect.

Therefore actively assisting our bodies in a healthy detox, is a safe way to support the elimination of toxic build up.

Detoxing organs, fat cells, and the COLON can be the start of a HEALTHY BODY and HEALTHY LIFE!

Ideas for holistic Detox: eliminate unhealthy processed foods from the diet and introduce nutrient rich and whole food sources, exercise, use safe herbal or homeopathic support, hydro-colon cleanse, Ion foot baths, reflexology, acupressure or acupuncture, massage, DRINK LOTS OF WATER, consciously live more healthy – one choice at a time!!…. and these are just some ideas.

Well first of all I’m 15 and I’m on probation as well (not even halfway through). I tested my first positive test, even if I had not smoked in F ***** FIVE months, so I give almost all my life for nothing (talk devastation). Well your question not be stressed guy, if she said that you no longer had to go so I’m 95% sure she was serious. In other words WAIT FOR HER to contact you, she is the one who supposedly has all the responsibility. It would be foolish of you to call before she called you. But instead, it would be wise to quit until you are 100% autorisé.Moi himself being a former “pothead” has done extensive research on obtaining marijuana in your system. And from what I read / heard these “detox kits” are not worth the money and they usually work. I was in a situation were I had a detox (Oxycontin) very fast. Bottom Line = excessive exercise and work UAE, provided they have the temps.Ne not kill yourself over this situation … but never be too relaxed about it either, when it is your weak point of yours! I stopped on Freaking virtually nowhere to rien.Bonne chance of being free, what I would do to win this title is disturbing. Do not screw up man … it will not bother, you know as well as moi.Si my answer was not as useful as you had hoped, anything Google, you seek to know it works.

If you’re new to exercising, the thought of sitting underneath a 50kg barbell is probably pretty terrifying. However, if you can’t lift heavy weights, or they just scare you a little bit, research published in the Journal of Applied Physiology suggests that lighter weights can have the same muscle-building effect, provided you do more reps.

Resistance training and muscle-building exercises are intimidating to anyone starting to exercise, and subsequently a lot of people stay away from it because they can’t imagine lifting the heavy weights. This research suggests that lifting small weights — even as low as 30 per cent of your maximum — can have nearly the same benefit as heavy loads. This is great news for people who shy away from muscle-building resistance training, because it means that small, less intimidating weights lifted with enough repetitions (three sets of 25-30 reps) have the same positive health effects as heavy ones. Combine this with a few of the most common exercise myths, and hitting the gym shouldn’t be intimidating at all.

  • (Photo: Lifechurch.tv)Craig Groeschel, pastor of LifeChurch.tv, is seen here. Groeschel recently authored Soul Detox: Clean Living in a Contaminated World.

May 12, 2012|3:20 pm

Through his new book, Soul Detox, the LifeChurch.tv pastor makes the case that many believers are absorbing toxins from culture, relationships, and habits that pollute their relationship with God and they don’t even know it.

“Everything that we allow into our minds, hearts, and lives – everything that we spend our time and money on – has an impact on how we grow, or don’t grow, spiritually,” he writes. “Just as we are what we eat physically, we are also what we consume spiritually. if we don’t monitor and adjust our diet accordingly, our souls are in danger of absorbing more and more lethal poison.”

Groeschel recently spoke with The Christian Post about his new book and his hope for Christians to live for what matters rather than settling for a cheap substitute.

CP: so you started the Soul Detox sermon series last month?

Groeschel: 2 weeks ago

Like us on Facebook

CP: have you gotten any reaction yet from the congregation?

Groeschel: Yeah, you know the driving thought that we’re not a body with a soul but we’re a soul with a body, learning that just as we are what we eat physically we are what we consume spiritually. I think a lot of people are really responding well to that. it kind of seems to be a deep ministry going on with a lot of people.

CP: it seems like the topic of Christians embracing their identity as Jesus followers and distiniguishing themselves from the wolrd is a passion of yours. I noticed a similar theme with your other books like Christian Atheist and weird. what is feeding this passion? are you tired of seeing Christians not fully embracing their identity?

Groeschel: I think that’s part of it. it seems to me like Christians are settling for a life that’s so much less than what God intended and that we’re easily seduced by culture into accepting things that may be harmful to our souls when God has such a better way to live. I’m really trying to help people see, if you listen to the message or have read the first pages of the book, the story I talk about where I grew up in a home where both my parents smoked when I was a kid, I didn’t realize I was inhaling poison and didn’t know I smelled like smoke for 18 years of my life until I moved out of the house then came back in to visit, then I realized this place really smells bad. I think so many of us Christians don’t realize we’re inhaling all sorts of things that are harmful to us. if we recognize it and really let God’s Word pierce our hearts I think we can live in a way that’s much more pleasing to God and much more helpful to others.

CP: You seem to be giving the congregation that “out of the house” experience so that they can see this is contaminating me.

Groeschel: right.

CP: Pastor Tim Keller had an illustration that I think fits here. He was actually talking about marriage and divorce but he said, if you go out into the rain even if you have an umbrella or raincoat on you’ll still get wet. He said we’re living in a corrosive culture and it’s really tough, you have all these things thrown at you. would you say it’s possible to live a clean life in a polluted world?

Groeschel: I think Tim’s illustration is good. I think that because by nature we’re sinners, living a life free of sin is ultimately impossible. But I do think there’s a level of purity both through Christ and practically living as well that’s attainable, that’s really greater than most of us realize.

CP: You say in the book that without being fully aware, many Christians end up being desensitized to what’s right and wrong and starting to believe lies to be truths and truths to be lies. are you seeing that play out more today? like with teens and their sex lives or with the culture wars?

Groeschel: I think things are probably getting worse in those areas. because we’re bombarded with so many messages through the different means of media and our kids seem to be [targeted] younger and younger …. I think they’re battling even more of an issue with their identity, probably even more vulnerable than we were and I was pretty vulnerable too, maybe even more vulnerable to finding their identity and approval of others in places that aren’t helpful instead of finding their identity in who they are in Christ.

CP: would you say it’s because there are just so many entertainment options and influences today, that it’s easier for them to find their identity in something else?

Groeschel: I do think there are so many more distractions today obviously than there were even 5 or 10 years ago. I think we’re bombarded with more messages than ever before through media and through culture that really tells us what we need to be happy, what we need to be popular. I think those messages can be really confusing and poisonous to all of us if we’re not praying to recognize what part of those messages are true and to know what is true.

CP: You mentioned that our responsibility is to discern what we let into our lives and that everything we do should reflect our commitment to Christ. I don’t think Christians would want to be held that accountable.

Groeschel: You’re probably right. I think most would want to believe that we’re not that accountable. But Scirpture says we’re going to be accountable for every word we speak so the level of accountability to God is probably going to be …. His grace is probably going to be greater than we realize and yet what we’re held accountable to and even the rewards may be greater than we realize as well. Meaning ultimately, the way we live today and what we believe today will have a greater impact on our eternity than we can imagine. Ultimately it’s harder for us to be eternal-minded in a world with so many temporal distractions. We need to learn, by the power of God’s Word and the Spirit, to overcome those and stay focused on the true prizes as best we can.

CP: what would you say to Christians on what they’d be missing out on by not fully living for Christ and immersing themselves in this world?

Groeschel: I think so much of what we think is the “fun, happy, meaningful” life is simply a substitute for the real thing. It’s kind of like money promises happiness and it promises security and in reality only God can give us happiness and only God can give us security. I think any time we settle for a substitute we’re missing out on what’s real. There’s having a relationship centered around Christ, that’s fun. Having a ministry where we make a difference more than just trying to make money, that’s fun. Living for a higher purpose and calling, that’s fun. Serving people in the name of Jesus, that’s fun. Even loving and forgiving and doing life together when it’s hard and messy with people and still loving, that’s ultimately fun. I think when we redefine what success is and what meaning of life is according to God’s standards we really can live a life that’s infinitely more meaningful than what most of us are settling for.

CP: how long would you say it took for you to realize that?

Groeschel: I still think I struggle with the lies every day. I certainly have not arrived at all. It’s kind of the closer I get to Christ, the more aware I am of my shortcomings and sinfulness so I wouldn’t even claim to be close to it. I would say that the closer I am to Christ the less I desire the things that this world offers and the more I drift from him, the more I crave the things this world offers. It’s kind of a daily and oftentimes hour by hour, minute by minute choice to try to stay focused on Christ and what’s eternal because it’s so easy to get sucked into the things that aren’t of him and for him.

CP: would you say the main cause of all this contamination is a lack of time that Christians actually spend with God whether it’s praying or reading the Bible?

Groeschel: I think certainly a lack of time with God would contribute to being vulnerable to sin … I also think it’s sometimes not taking seriously what God says that we may spend time with him but not take it seriously or believe we’re supposed to obey. I think it’s both. Learning what He says and also taking it seriously.

CP: do you think pastors or churches contribute to the problem of contamination by bringing in bits of culture to sermons or worship songs or simply by not calling for more commitment?

Groeschel: I don’t think that culture is bad just like money’s not bad. But there are certain messages … for example a movie can be a horrible influence or it can be an incredible influence. so the medium isn’t what’s bad, it’s the message behind the medium that we need to watch out for. By bringing some kind of illustration into a sermon I don’t think that’s harmful, I think it can be helpful unless we’re bringing the wrong message into a sermon.

CP: You identify “toxic religion” which focuses on behavior and what I do instead of what Jesus did. But do you think there are also dangers in just emphasizing the salvation of the soul? For example, in a recent interview The Christian Post did with Ken Myers, of Mars Hill Audio Journal, he identified the biggest challenge to the church as not the outside culture but the culture of the church – he said “we have reduced the Gospel to an abstract message of salvation that can be believed without having any necessary consequences for how we live.”

Groeschel: I think it’s a fair question. I don’t think the message of salvation alone leads people to live however they want. It’s a little bit like Romans 6 raises the question, shall we go on sinning that grace may abound; by no means if God’s going to forgive us, why does it matter? To me the difference is in the root of the approach which is legalism or religion says “if I obey God, God will love me.” But I believe the Gospel’s message says more: “Because God loves me, I want to obey him.” so I think a person whose heart’s truly been forgiven, someone whose soul’s been saved is going to have a desire to grow spiritually and to obey unless they start to believe lies or are deceived. That’s why being grounded in God’s Word is so important. That’s a fair question and we should let the tension speak and not just assume I got someone to pray a prayer and so they’re good to go. I think there’s a lot more to truly being saved than that.

CP: Should churches be challenging their congregations more in terms of transforming their whole lives?

Groeschel: I think unquestionably we should be raising the standard in the church, and by that letting God’s Word speak plainly because His Word is living and is active and it convicts, it helps to purify. I don’t know if that answers your question. Unquestionably today we have to present God’s Word clearly and not water it down and not try to be so clever in our presentation that we lose the essence of what it says.

CP: so what role should pastors play in this “Soul Detox” process?

Groeschel: I think the first place we start is with ourselves and recognize that we all have virtually unlimited ability to deceive ourselves and to recognize in our own lives the areas that God needs to work on. I think as we’re continuing to grow in Christ, then we’re going to do a better job of leading others as well. But in the church, I’d like to call it, we call it the paradox at our church: we really do want to help people feel comfortable in the church, meaning they feel welcomed and loved but not at the expense of softening the Gospel. so we want them to feel simultaneous comfort and confrontation, that they’re comforted by loving, accepting people but they’re also confronted with the truth of God’s Word.

It’s just like when Jesus came full of grace and truth, if it’s all truth and no grace we’ll fall into legalism. if we fall into all grace and no truth, we’ll fall into do whatever you want gospel. so I think as churches we need to teach God’s Word with grace and truth and practically we see that as comfort and confrontation.

CP: how do you think Christianity or the world will change if all Christians went through this “Soul Detox?”

Groeschel: First of all, I think the people would have a deeper intimacy with God that would overflow into every area of their lives. I think relationally we’d be transformed, because we’d be loving out of pure motives and out of truths rather than out of our own insecurities. and then ultimately I think we would live for the things that last and matter instead of living for selfish and temporary desires. I don’t think this book is the answer to the whole world. God’s Word and His power is ultimately everything. But I think this would be a big step forward in our intimacy with God that would overflow into effective ministry and everything we do.

CP: last question. You have 15 church campuses now, you’re one of the most influential pastors in the country, you also have the YouVersion Bible app that’s being downloaded everywhere, and books, so you’ve accomplished a lot already. What’s next for you?

Groeschel: You know, the only thing I’m passionate about more than anything else is building the church and I feel like serving pastors and turning messages into a book is kind of a helpful overflow of the ministry. But all I dream about and wake up thinking about is building the church. sometimes people ask what are we doing next that we’re excited about. Our philosophy is to just to be in the ready position. I don’t have the ability to predict five years into the future, not even a year into the future. so we just try to make sure we’ve got extra time and margin financially to grow at whatever opportunities God brings and YouVersion was one of those that we just felt was the right idea at the right time that God would love. right now it’s just continuing to do what we’re doing which is evangelizing people, getting God’s Word out, building leaders and starting churches. if I get to do that for the rest of my life, I’ll be a happy guy.

CP: Even if you work on weekends? (mentioned in the book)

Groeschel: Even if you work on weekends, right.
