The rich and famous check into a private clinic and get a snip here and a tuck there and walk out looking five or even 10 years younger.

Both men and women want to look young for as long as possible. If we had pots of money we would all bathe in milk, soak our bodies in honey and spend hours in tubs of vitamin E cream.

Every sister I know is on some special diet, detox programme or has taken up some exercise regime all in the hope of retaining supple skin and staving off the ravages of old age.

I try and eat healthily and exercise every morning. I drink water but I just never manage more than four glasses of water a day. I have scrubbed my hands with sugar or salt mixed with olive oil and at some point spent half an hour with my hands dipped in mashed avocado and my face covered in egg yolk and oats. like many mad women, I have done a lot of insane things recommended by an even crazier person.

But there are age defying acts that do not require you spending money but just need you to be in a relationship. Research is carried out on almost anything now and some researchers have been very busy.

My favourite magazine; Men’s Health in their October issue published very interesting findings about how lovemaking can knock some years off your looks. their assumption of course is that everyone above 35 is in some sort of relationship. The reality though is that there is a growing number of women who have a long running relationship with a regular slice of cheesecake, the television and couch, while their male unattached counterparts nurse a beer and watch sport.

Anyway, you might not have someone to shake off the years with but maybe tomorrow will be a better day so store the information for future use. The various studies focused on men but I am assuming if making love can do so many wonders for the brothers it must also benefit the girls.

The National Cancer Institute in America found that men who reported 21 sex climaxes or more a month were less likely to have prostate cancer than those who had fewer sex climaxes.

In Britain, the British Medical Journal found that the death rate was slashed by 50% for men experiencing the highest frequency in climaxes. The trick here is in not just making love but also achieving above average enjoyment.

A study at Wilkes University in Pennsylvania says people who make love once or twice a week have stronger immune systems. At Ohio State University the findings were that wounds inflicted in a study healed nearly two times faster when there was positive interaction between couples.

In Australia a study of 5 000 people concluded that married men who had more amorous trysts with their wives on a regular basis were 135% more likely to be happier than single men.

Making love is rated good cardio vascular exercise. a 75kg man can burn 863 kilojoules during half an hour of vigorous lovemaking.

Couples that have a happy physical relationship normally still find each other attractive, still communicate and still find kissing and touching a natural way of showing each other they care. In some relationships intimacy is history and couples pretty much lead separate lives.

Relationship specialists recommend that you set aside just one minute at the beginning of each day for some skin-on-skin contact to start oxytocin production — this is a hormone that produces a lasting feeling of intimacy and might just save your relationship. all it takes is a kiss in the morning, a hug after work and another kiss before bed. Sounds simple but can be a real battle if you are in a loveless relationship.

All these universities and hospitals doing all these studies must be very worried about the state of  relationships worldwide. are we going to wake up one day and hear our grandchildren discuss the possibility of enrolling for a Masters in the art of kissing or lasting sexual pleasure?

Anyway, whichever way we are headed, I hope those with the wherewithal, will put the research findings to good use. and for those hugging a beer or a slice of cheesecake, do not lose heart — hit the floor and exercise. a good workout will rid you of all that tension of unfulfilled emotions and physical needs and also keep you in good nick.

Portland Police said volunteers requested help Monday dealing with an "overwhelming" number of mental health issues at the Occupy Portland camp. Below is a media release from the Portland Police Bureau detailing the events officers encountered on Monday, Oct. 24.

The following series of events involving Occupy Portland that occurred on Monday, October 24, 2011 and early morning Tuesday, October 25, 2011:

7 a.m.: Central Precinct officers received a request from Occupy Portland to get in touch with Project Respond. The volunteers at Occupy Portland report they are getting overwhelmed with the amount of mental health issues presenting themselves at the camp and want to establish a liaison with Project Respond to help in dealing with these problems as they occur. Officer Miller of the Mobile Crisis Unit is the liaison.

10:30 a.m.: East Precinct officers were leaving the Multnomah County Courthouse when a woman, 39-year-old Angela Hallinger, threw a paintbrush at the officers because they would not stop and look at her art. The paintbrush hit one of the officer’s pants and left paint on them. The subject then picked up the paintbrush and threw it again at them, just missing their heads. Officers were told that a Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney had reported that a woman was flashing her breasts at people. It was determined that it had been Hallinger, and she was arrested and booked in the Multnomah County Detention Center for Disorderly Conduct in the second Degree and Criminal Mischief in the third Degree.

During the same incident, officers found that the porta-potties on the south side of Chapman Square along Southwest Madison Street were overflowing and it appeared raw sewage was running down the sidewalk toward Southwest 3rd Avenue. The sanitary conditions were reported to the Parks Bureau who said they were aware of issue.

3 p.m.: Officers received a report that Hallinger was out of jail and flashing her breasts again at the camp. She was excluded from the parks.

On Monday’s afternoon shift, there were multiple calls of various fights/disturbances. Officers said there appeared to be a different call every 45 minutes or so, called in by witnesses to these incidents. Several were unverified, with no complainants or suspects located. The following were reported incidents:

6:35 p.m.: a very intoxicated/high subject was contacted at the corner of Southwest 3rd avenue and Main Street. It appeared that 25-year-old Dylan K. Hunter, was acting in a confusing manner and was on probation for Delivery of a Controlled Substance/ Methamphetamine. He was given a citation and transported to Hooper Detox.

6:45 p.m.: a sergeant took a phone call from a "donor" of two food boxes to Occupy and he wanted to complain that when they dropped off the food, he and his friend saw "buckets of human waste" sitting around the camp. This was very disturbing to the donor and his friend.

7:56 p.m.: Uniform officers responded to a call of a man causing a disturbance near the medical tent of "Camp A" (Lownsdale park). He was reportedly throwing things and knocking down fences. He was wandering around the Veterans Memorial, which is located in the center of the park.

Officers observed 35-year-old Devn Merner acting in a bizarre manner. He had red paint on his feet and torso. Occupy Portland peacekeepers were trying to talk to him while he displayed "fighting poses," but he refused their contact. Officers requested Project Respond to assist with this contact.

Merner turned his attention to officers and advanced toward them. Merner began to circle the officers both rapidly and at a very close distance, and eventually stopped in front of one of the officers, grabbing the arm of the officer’s jacket. This placed the officer in a potentially dangerous situation, with a subject grabbing on his arm and within reach of being struck or his weapon grabbed. at this point, officers took custody of Merner and he was lodged at the Multnomah County Detention Center on Disorderly Conduct, Resisting Arrest and Harassment.

9:30 p.m.: Officers responded to a call regarding "5 subjects beating another subject," in the center of Chapman Square, by the drinking fountain. Officers could not find any victim or suspect and overheard people say everyone "ran off." within a minute or two, district officers received another call of a fight at 3rd Avenue and Yamhill, similar to the one from the park. It appeared related, with the suspects chasing the victim through the blocks. As officers arrived, they were told by witnesses that the group was chasing the victim down Southwest 4th Avenue toward Burnside Street. It was reported as many as "15 street kids with skateboards" were chasing a shirtless subject.

A total of 3 separate calls from different locations were generated about this incident. The victim was reportedly hiding out in a camp on West Burnside, at 4th Avenue. The victim was ultimately located at Northwest 4th Avenue at Couch. The victim, 19-year-old male, said he was assaulted in Chapman Square by a group of street kids, after he had a verbal altercation about a dispute a friend of his had earlier in the day with the group.

The victim reported he was jumped from behind by a group of bandana-masked subjects, and repeatedly punched in the face and head. He said Occupy Portland peacekeepers came over to him suggested he "run away," since they could do nothing to stop the assault. The victim reported he was chased to 4th Avenue and Burnside, where two of the masked subjects continued to assault him. He said others in the area assisted him, and the suspects ran off. The victim was injured in the face, and said he thought about calling the police, but decided not to, since the residents of Occupy Portland are supposed to take care of these matters themselves.

11:59 p.m: a known subject, walked into Central Precinct to report an "assault." He reported someone had pointed a finger at him, and that was the assault. He made several alleged assault reports during this event. The subject returned 10 minutes later to report a "riot" at Occupy Portland. there was no riot in progress. The subject was told to leave, but initially refused. He was escorted from Central Precinct lobby, given an trespass order, and told if he returns again to make an erroneous report he may be arrested.

October 25, 2011, 4:56 a.m.: a resident of Occupy Portland called 911 to report a man inside the encampment who had punched someone and broken a bottle. Officers spoke with the victim of the punch and learned the suspect had fled after the incident. The victim did not require medical attention. Witnesses believe the suspect does not live in the encampment and was possibly intoxicated.

Weight loss is something everybody on the planet thinks about.

Many people have tried dieting, fasting, working out, only to get very limited results or none at all. Many people even put on more weight than they originally had. How could this be?

Weight loss is more than what is on the outside. it has a lot to do with your mindset. you need to mentally prepare yourself to take massive action and dedicate yourself to turning your life around.

The Dalai Lama once said With realization of one’s own potential and self-confidence in one’s ability, one can build a better world. This applies very much to weight loss. you can build a better world for yourself once you believe and see yourself losing weight and becoming the person you want to be.

Exercise is important. you can lose weight by not exercising although the fitter and stronger you are the better you will feel. The two main types of exercise is cardio and weight lifting. Combined they can bring killer results.

Cardio, I find is good to strip fat and keep you lean while weights will provide the muscle and curves that we all desire.

Swimming is a very good workout. it is one of the few exercises that require the use of every muscle in the body. Rowing is brilliant but now all of us have the opportunity to engage in such a sport due to location, cost etc.

When lifting weights, it is important to maintain a good speed if you are dedicated to getting the body you want. Lifting heavy weights and having a long break won’t do you much good.

Weight lifting needs to be quick and intense. I personally only workout for 30 mins 3 times a week and because I have a high intensity workout, my body is exactly how I want it to be. A good workout is the 300 workout. you can Google it if you like. it was designed for the movie 300 and is an incredible workout that will deliver massive results providing you are dedicated.

If exercising is not for you. maybe you don’t have the time, the interest, I don’t know why, but whatever the reason is you can still lose weight and get that perfect body through smart dieting.

Everyone out there has their own techniques on losing weight through dieting, e.g. low calorie diet, no carb diet, lemon detox, the list goes on. these diets may have worked for some people but will not work for everyone. A diet should feel natural. it shouldn’t require stress, bland foods, and expensive supplements. I believe diets should be interesting, exciting, it should make life brighter.

My diet consists on mainly natural foods. most natural foods have a low Glycemic index. This simply means they release energy slower and steadily and you stay full for longer.

A perfect example of this is Oats. If you eat oats for breakfast, chances are you won’t be craving for food for much longer time and you will still have all the energy you need.

Try eating wholemeal pasta as well. it doesn’t taste as bad you might think. Mix it with a nice natural sauce and you honestly can not even tell you are eating wholemeal. it feels natural like a diet is supposed to.

Fruit is a good alternative to lollies and cakes. Fruit is not very boring when you put a little effort into the preparation. I don’t like eating oranges or apples and many others. Buy when I cut them up and mix with some natural low-fat yoghurt they become irresistible. Try making smoothies with them. Simply pick your fruit, add some juice and low-fat natural yoghurt and blend. So simple yet so good. Fruits rich in Vitamin C such as, kiwifruit, oranges, mangoes, and pineapples to name a few help speed up metabolism.

The simplest way I can think of to describe Metabolism the rate at which you burn energy. The higher your metabolism the faster you will burn fat. it is common for larger people to have a lower metabolism due to the volume to surface ratio. If you need more clarification on this. Google has a tonne of pages that talk about this.

Natural food is truly, in my opinion, better. I believe all the preservatives and additives in food nowadays is doing us more harm than good. next time you go shopping, have a quick look on the ingredients list. most foods will contain many additives that will be labeled as numbers. Many people, including myself, don’t understand half the additives that come in food. Many of these can be harmful in children causing allergies, asthma, and severe headaches. I find its easier to stick to my fruit and yoghurt and other natural foods such as salad, and organic meat. Apply these simple principles and your life will turn around for the better in no time at all.

HOMEMADE GINGER TEA:1 small cut of ginger root (about the size of your thumb tip)2 cups fresh water

Boil 2 cups of water and add fresh sliced or coarsely grated ginger. Reduce the heat and let it simmer it for fifteen or twenty minutes. You can strain the ginger pieces, but it is advised that you keep them in and chew them as you drink. the tea is beneficial either warm or cold and you may also add a squeeze of lemon or few spoonful of local honey. Ginger tea is good for circulation, the immune system, regulating blood sugar and dispelling nausea.

GREEN JUICE (serves 2 to 3-depending on your juicer):make in juicer or combine ingredients in a blender with 1 cup or more apple juice in place of the apple. the amount of juice will depend on your blender.

1 bunch kale1 Bunch spinach1 bunch parsley1 head romaine lettuce4 raw carrots1 apple

BERRY GREEN SMOOTHIE(2 to 3 servings):

1 recipe green juice1 cup strawberries½ cup blueberries½ cup raspberries1 ripe avocado

Blend all ingredients in a blender. if you don’t have a juicer, simply combine the ingredients for juicing, above, in the blender. cut all amounts in half. use unfiltered apple juice instead of an apple.

16oz of fresh, lukewarm (not hot, remember you want to drink quickly) water1 dash cayenne pepper,Juice of a whole lemon
