What is a Body Detox?
Detox (short for detoxification) is the excretion of toxins and toxic substances from the body. this is usually carried out quite naturally by the filtration organs of the body, namely Liver, Kidneys, Lymphatic System and Gastro-intestinal System, or large bowel. The Liver is the primary filtration and detoxification organ of the body, ensuring that toxins that enter your body are withdrawn and neutralized so as to not be continually in circulation throughout the body via the bloodstream. The Kidneys are a pair of organs responsible for removal of the by-products of the Liver’s attempts to neutralize the bodily toxins, whilst ensuring the body maintains adequate fluid levels or hydration. The Lymphatic System helps to remove biological toxins such as infections by initial neutralization and then filtration via the circulatory system or blood stream. The large bowel physically traps larger particles, absorbing the nutrients and enabling the waste material to be egested. all of this happens every minute of every day without assistance, thought or need of attention, and is regulated by the body’s own needs and requirements via a feedback mechanism.
So Why Carry Out a Body Detox?
Why indeed, if the body carries out this amazing process by itself. Well the reason is that in the modern world we are increasingly exposed to many more toxic and harmful materials than we ever were in the past. in addition, due to the increased affluence of the West, we are prone to overindulgence; eating far more than we should and subjecting our bodies to excessive alcohol and other legal and illicit drugs. The air that we breathe contains particulates and gasses that are harmful to our health, as well as the water we drink containing chemicals and metals. The environments in which we live and work are rich in harmful substances that all go to overwhelm our body’s natural detoxification process. this leads to a build-up of harmful material which at best makes us feel tired and sluggish and at worst can lead to ill-health and possibly chronic conditions. The body therefore needs some assistance to ensure that it continues to run smoothly and healthily.
So how do we Carry Out a Body Detox?
Initially reducing the amounts of toxins you are exposed to will assist the body in catching up. Whilst not much can be done to alter your working environment, a healthy diet is essential for a healthy body. A detox diet will greatly assist your body to further excrete the build-up of toxins. A detox diet is necessary to boost the filtration organs’ ability to carry out their functions. A detox diet will consist of foods that are rich in nutrients required by those organs. Fasting so as to rest the organs is another consideration, but should only be done for a very short time and with the agreement of your doctor. Stimulating the Liver, the primary detox organ, will boost its ability to expel toxins, as will support for the kidneys with mild naturally occurring diuretics and increasing dietary fibre to assist the bowels. Improving circulation via massage, hydrotherapy and brushing will assist the circulatory and lymphatic drainage. Lastly, ensure that any diet you partake in is rich in only those nutrients required by the body and reduce the amounts of processed and artificially altered foods.
